Underfloor system will provide year-round comfort at Canary Wharf
Posted by admin on Monday, November 29 @ 10:26:32 CET (28990 reads)
News

Building Services &
Environmental Engineer
Year-round comfort will be provided in two new public spaces at London’s Canary Wharf development by underfloor heating and cooling systems based on polybutene-1 (PB-) pipes.

The East and West Winter Gardens are designed as ‘urban rooms’ and are due for completion early in 2004. These gardens are housed in two glazed structures that rise to some 30 m at their highest point.

The underfloor heating system is design to maintain winter temperatures at 18°C ±2 K and to control summer temperatures to a maximum of 26°C.

In heating mode, the floor area provides both radiant and convective heat. In the summer the stone floors are cooled to act as a heat sink to offset the solar gain through the massive glazed roofs. Temperature control is thus applied to the occupied zone, rather than large amounts of energy being used to heat the high-level space.

Underfloor heating is also being used in a gallery link bridge at first-floor level. This is where the flexibility of PB-1 was a definite advantage, as the pipes could be easily ‘cabled’ through restricted areas. The Winter Gardens will be used as a multi-purpose arena for promotion, product launches and as a venue for public events. It is expected that the gardens will become one of the busiest areas within Canary Wharf. Keith Barker of the Polybutene Piping Systems Association, an association formed to underline manufacturers’ confidence in PB-1, says, ‘Pipe flexibility, ease and speed of installation and the operational lifetime of over 50 years are just a few of the benefits PB-1 can bring to any installation.’

The end of full air-conditioning

News .
Office building in Hamburg

Because of high costs and energy some European countries debated if full air-conditioning is recommendable or should be

... prohibited by law

There exist many examples of discomfort in air-conditioned buildings due to draught, noise and sick building syndrome.

Alternative

Alternatively the heating and cooling may be done by water based radiant heating and cooling systems.

Find the full article by Bjarne W. Olesen, Ph.D. in the Download section "Hydronic radiant heating and cooling of buildings using pipes embedded in the building structure" as a zip-file.
